Clean flood cut along a wall, studs exposed, wet insulation bagged

Gypsum board is compressed mineral wrapped in paper, and it soaks up water fast. A leak at floor level can climb a foot or more up the wall within a day. The paper loosens, the core softens and paint bubbles or peels. Behind it, insulation and the bottom of the framing are usually wet too.

Not every wet wall has to be torn out. Drywall exposed briefly to clean water, and still firm, can often be dried in place. Board that has crumbled, sagged or soaked up dirty water cannot. We measure, explain the difference and remove only what failed, keeping the repair as small as it safely can be.

Once the cavity is dry, we put the surface back: new board, taped seams, matching texture and primer ready for your paint. The repair should blend into the room so you never notice a mismatched patch that brings the leak back to mind each time you pass.

In-Wall Moisture Testing

A thermal camera spots cool, damp areas first, then moisture meters confirm. Pinless meters scan the surface without marking it, and pin meters read at a specific depth. Together they show the top of the wet zone along every wall, often well above any visible stain.

Testing also tells us whether the board is still sound. Firm board with moderate readings after a clean-water leak may dry in place with targeted airflow, while soft, swollen or crumbling board is marked for removal. Each reading goes on a room sketch so you can see what drove the decision.

Flood Cuts and Controlled Tear-Out

When drywall has to come out, we remove it with a straight, level cut a short distance above the highest wet reading. That clean line makes the rebuild faster and neater than ragged removal. Cuts typically land at two or four feet, matching standard sheet sizes and reducing waste.

Baseboards are pulled carefully for reuse when possible, and floors and furnishings are protected from dust. After sewage or outside flooding, the IICRC S500 approach is to remove affected board rather than dry it, and we follow that standard so no contaminated material stays in the wall.

Wall Cavity and Insulation Drying

Fiberglass batts behind wet drywall hold water against the studs and bottom plate, so we usually remove wet insulation from the open section. If the board is being saved, small holes drilled behind the baseboard let us push dry air into the cavity without opening the whole wall.

Air movers and a dehumidifier then dry the studs and plates. We check the wood daily and do not close the wall until it meets its dry standard, because a sealed damp cavity is how hidden mold starts. Our mold removal page explains what happens when it does.

Patching, Texture Matching and Priming

With the framing dry, new drywall is hung, seams are taped and coated with joint compound in several thin passes, and the edges are feathered into the existing wall. Moisture-resistant board is an option in bathrooms and laundry rooms, where leaks tend to happen again.

Texture is where patches give themselves away. We study the existing finish, whether smooth, orange peel or knockdown, and blend it at the edges. Water-stained board nearby gets a stain-blocking primer, and the wall is left primed so your painter can match color on the first coat.

Why us

Why Choose Us for Drywall Water Damage Repair

We Remove Only What Has Failed

Cutting out more wall than needed raises your cost and stretches the schedule. Cutting too little hides wet material behind new board. Meter readings decide where the line goes, and we explain it before cutting so you know why each section stays or goes.

Drying and Rebuilding Under One Plan

Because we dry the cavity and rebuild the surface as one job, the wall does not sit open waiting on another trade. We close it only after the framing tests dry, and we keep the patch size in mind during tear-out so the finished repair stays clean.

Photo and Moisture Records

We photograph the wall before, during and after removal, including inside the cavity, and record the readings behind each cut line. That record helps your adjuster understand the scope and shows any future buyer or inspector the wall was dried before it was closed.

Tucson

Drywall Damage in Tucson's Dry Climate and Slab Homes

Tucson's low humidity can make a wet wall look dry within a day. The paint lightens and feels normal while the gypsum core, the back paper and the bottom plate stay damp. That gap between appearance and reality is why we trust meters over touch, especially when a wall seemed fine after a day or two.

In slab homes, the bottom plate of each wall sits right on the concrete, so a leak spreading across the floor reaches every wall it touches. Exterior walls with stucco outside usually have drywall inside, and water that gets past the stucco often shows up there first as staining near the floor.

What Drywall Water Damage Repair Costs in Tucson

Drywall repair is often one of the smaller parts of a water loss, but price still varies with how much wall is affected and how the finish must be matched. Treat these as typical figures, not a quote; a written number follows a free inspection.

The main factors are the length of wall cut out, the flood cut height, insulation replacement, the texture type and whether ceilings are involved. Painting is usually separate. When the leak was sudden, wall repair is often part of a covered claim, and our records support it.

FAQ

Drywall Water Damage FAQs

Is it possible to save wet drywall without tearing it out?

Sometimes. If the water was clean, the board is still firm and drying starts promptly, drywall can often be dried in place by venting the cavity. If it is soft, sagging, crumbling or was soaked by sewage or floodwater, it should come out. Moisture readings and a firmness check tell us which applies.

How much does drywall water damage repair cost in Tucson?

Small repairs start at $500, and most drywall water damage jobs fall between $1,000 and $4,000, with larger rooms or several walls going higher. The amount of wall removed, insulation, texture matching and drying needs set the price. The inspection is free, and you see a written estimate before anything starts.

What is a flood cut?

A flood cut is a straight, level line cut along a wall above the highest point where moisture was detected. Everything below it is removed, letting the framing dry and making new sheets easy to install. It is neater than tearing out random pieces and keeps hidden wet board from staying behind.

Why does the water damage go higher than the puddle was?

Drywall wicks water upward through its gypsum core and paper facing, much like a paper towel dipped in a glass. A leak that was never more than an inch deep can leave the board wet a foot or more up the wall. That is why we measure the wall itself before deciding where to cut.

Will the patched wall look different from the rest of the room?

Our aim is for it not to. We match the existing texture, feather the joint compound into the surrounding wall and prime stained areas so they cannot bleed through. Once your painter rolls the wall, the repair should be hard to spot, and painting the full wall corner to corner gives the most uniform result.
